On Saturday, January 17th, 22 hikers from various areas of Andros (Fellos, Gavrio, Chones, Kapparia, Chora, Menites, Messaria, Strapouries, Apoikia), as well as visitors from Athens who were not deterred by the strong cold wind, gathered at the Monastery of Panagia Tromarchiani for the second maintenance hike of the year on the circular route of Tromarchia.
In the shadow of the monastery, we introduced ourselves and shared the story of the monastery and the Tromarchia area: who built it, when it was founded, and how many centuries it has stood the test of time. It was a captivating narration, harmoniously intertwined with the breathtaking view surrounding it. Before setting off, maintenance tools were distributed and roles were assigned, with Stamatis Pantazis serving as the new Route Angel of the path, leading the group.
We followed the southbound route waymarked as Tr1, which crosses the area’s agricultural landscape with its impressive dry-stone walls and narrow paths. As we moved forward, the view of the steep and arid western coastline became increasingly striking.
As we ascended, we encountered little vegetation that required clearing. Some thicker oleanders were cut, which took more time, while fallen signposts were replaced and two new ones were installed at a road junction, making the route clearer for future hikers.
At the point where the path intersects the tarmac road, the landscape changed. Before us unfolded the Korthi Valley, with Ormos Korthiou visible in the distance. The route continued through areas with denser vegetation and water, where additional maintenance was needed. The team’s efforts and steps contributed substantially to improving the condition of the path.
We completed the hike in about two and a half hours. Although everyone was eager to warm up in their cars, the day was truly wonderful.
We thank everyone who took part in the maintenance hike and look forward to seeing you at the next one on Sunday, February 1st, on the route Vourkoti – Agios Nikolaos Monastery!
