“Dear Olga, We feel very fortunate to have made our permanent home in Pelion since 2005. It is a paradise. We learned quickly how rich the nature and vegetation is when you spend the whole year and experience all the seasons in Greece.
\nHidden in nature, fields and forests are the most amazing ancient footpaths and kalderimia. We have spent a lot of time with a few volunteer friends to open and sign the paths of Pelion.
\nWe were enthusiastic to join a group of friends from EOS Volos ( the mountain club) and Friends of the Kalderimi of South Pelion to visit Andros.
\nWe knew Andros was well known as a model of excellence within Greece and beyond when it comes to hiking the Andros Routes.
\nWe were curious to see and experience it for ourselves. How good could it be? What can volunteers achieve? How do they operate so successfully.
\nWe have spent 3 days walking over the May day holiday weekend hiking several of the trails.
\nWe have walked about 50km. We were not organisers or leaders just participants.
\nAll I can say is that we are incredibly impressed at the variety of beautiful routes. They are well maintained and the waymarking is incredible. Very easy to follow and comprehensive. On many occasions during the walks I was in the front, I was not referring constantly to map. I was just walking easily and confidentially certain that I was on the right track.
\nThis enables us to really enjoy the hikes, to take in all of the amazing sites along the way. The big panoramic views, the tiny wild flowers, watermills, churches, monasteries and sights and sounds in the villages you pass by and the people you meet along the way.
\nCan we do something similar in Pelion? I really don’t know. Are we motivated to try. Definitely.
\nBravo Andros Routes and to every volunteer and contributor. It is an amazing project achieved through a great deal of very hard work, cooperation and collaboration.
\nYou are amazing and an inspiration. We shall return before too long.
