In October 2018 Andros celebrates its treasure…the footpaths !

In recent years, Andros has come a long way …. over 170km of the Andros hiking network has been painstakingly restored and waymarked to European hiking standards, a continuous long distance path, the 100km Andros route, has been created, Andros was the first island to receive the prestigious European Leading Quality Trails-Best of Europe certification, the numbers of hikers visiting Andros has continued to multiply and each year we have seen new hiking tour operators select Andros as a destination for the first time. Our visitors come to experience the richness of Andros, its rugged coastline, the richness of its green unspoilt interior with its ancient manmade landscape. However, none of this would have been possible without the invaluable help of the people and local associations of Andros with the support of the Southern Aegean region and the Municipality of Andros. They are the real heroes of this story.

In 2018 we have reached 3 years of European Certification and it is time for the Andros Route to be re-certified. To mark this milestone in our journey, Andros Routes, the non-profit co-ordinator of the Andros footpaths project announces, with great pleasure, the 1st Andros on Foot festival from 6 to 28 October 2018.

The Andros on Foot Festival will be a celebration of the unique beauty of Andros experienced on foot. It is dedicated to both the people of Andros and to our visitors from the rest of Greece and abroad. There will be a program of activities across the network of hiking routes which, with the help of village associations and cultural clubs, will have a truly local flavour for all to experience.

The festival will include the 2nd Greek Trails Meeting in Andros during the weekend of 12-14 October 2018. The conference is being organised with the cooperation of the Greek Ministry of the Environment. Preparations are already underway to make this conference a meaningful working meeting between stakeholders, agencies and interested people from all over Greece.
