On Sunday, March 1st, we carried out the 4th maintenance hike for 2026 on the circular Aprovatou route, waymarked as Aprov1, hosted by the route angels Alona and Joel.
Nineteen participants took part in this beautiful and challenging maintenance hike, including two energetic and enthusiastic “route angels” grandchildren and five dogs. Most of the participants were from different parts of Andros- Menites, Gavrio, Kapparia, Chora, Agios Petros, Chartes, Apoikia, Aprovatou and Fellos. Others joined us from Athens, as well as a few German visitors to the island. We were accompanied by the area coordinator Siabanos Padelis.
It was a cold and windy day, especially along the higher section of the route, but this didn’t dampen the group’s positive spirit and good mood. Wrapped in hats, coats, gloves and plenty of enthusiasm, we began our hike from the highest point, at the restaurant Aegean Balcony. From there, we started descending the path, with the children proudly leading the way. They helped their grandfather, searched for the waymarks at intersections, and impressively navigated sections with dense vegetation- even nettles.
Everyone was equipped with either a tool or a litter bag. Together, we trimmed overgrowth vegetation, collected litter, and restored fallen stones along the dry-stone walls.
Although the route is generally in good condition, some sections still require attention with mechanical tools to manage overgrown vegetation.
Clear signs of the approaching spring were visible along the way, with delicate flowers blooming in white, yellow and purple – truly beautiful.
Our descent ended at the wild but peaceful beach of Koutsi, where we rested, drank water and enjoyed a snack before beginning our ascent back to the end point. On the beach, we passed two intriguing house ruins that were once part of the local onion cultivation and trade.
The day concluded with an excellent traditional meal at the Aegean Balcony.
We would like to warmly thank everyone who contributed their time and energy to maintaining our beautiful route. We look forward for the next maintenance hike on Sunday March 15th!
