The Andros Research Center at the 100th Anniversary of the Andrion Club
The celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the Andrion Club concluded with an event held at Athens College. The event took place on Saturday, January 31, 2026, bringing together Andros’ locals, friends of the island, and supporters of the Club’s work.
The central theme of the evening was “Regenerative Island Development”, with a focus on the case of Andros and the role of the Club in maintaining social cohesion and strengthening the local economy.
Opening remarks were delivered by the President of the Andrion Club, Dimitrios Kokkinis, historian Eleni Beneki, and the Mayor of Andros, Theodosios Sousoudis.
Two panel discussions followed:
First panel: “The Andros Society as a Driver of Social Cohesion”
Moderator: Giorgos Geraris ’90
The speakers Stella Pantelia, Kostas Milas, Christos Balogiannis, and Marios Begzos presented the Club’s work, social initiatives, and vision for the years ahead.
Second panel: “Regional Regenerative Development and Andros as a Model”
Speakers included Vicky Flegga, Olga Karagianni, Thanos Koutsianas, Deputy Mayor of Andros Spyros Tsaousis, and Chariton Koryzis.
Olga Karagianni, representing the Andros Research Center, contributed with brief interventions in response to questions posed by the panel moderator. Key points highlighted during the discussion included:
the contribution of the Andros Routes initiative as a regenerative effort for the island, particularly in relation to
a) the preservation and revitalization of the rural landscape and settlements,
b) the quality of life of residents, and
c) the development of sustainable mobility and tourism
the need and opportunity to approach Andros’ natural and cultural heritage as a field for research and innovation related to climate resilience and traditional resource management practices (dry-stone walls, terraces, water management, traditional cultivation, agri-food systems)
the importance of establishing a shared vision for the quality of life of residents and the long-term sustainability of Andros
The evening concluded with a reception at the SAKA venue, featuring live music and flavors from Andros’ local cuisine. Local producers, wineries, and confectioneries supported the event, adding an even more festive touch.
