The Andros Routes project in the Guardian for the 2nd time!

Particularly honorable and significant for the efforts of our organization “Andros Research Center” and the Andros Routes project, towards the sustainable development of Andros through hiking, hiking tourism and the connection with local producers, is the publication of an article by the British print and online newspaper “The Guardian” on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.

The article is titled “Walking in Greece: helping to restore the ancient trails of Andros island” and describes the experience of the two journalists Rhonda Carrier and her friend Stacey, who visited Andros last summer to hike!

The article highlights the demanding work of maintaining the hiking routes of Andros by the volunteers of the Andros Routes project, as the journalists experienced it during their visit to Andros. The article also emphasizes the “feminine” character of the project, as several women participate in it. It highlights the rich values and natural beauty of Andros, which is revealed to the visiting hiker and encourages the active participation of visitors in the maintenance of the routes, emphasizing the crucial pursuit of sustainability.

The trip was supported by a British travel agency that offers hiking trips to Andros for groups and individual visitors. Our organization supported the organization of the trip, encouraging the journalists to contact local cultural associations and local producers who are near the hiking routes.

The journalists had the opportunity to see first-hand the important work of the Menites Cultural Association, which has undertaken the maintenance of the hiking routes in Menites, as well as to walk with Route Angels Valentini Deskoulidou and Vicky Vernardi and learn how the routes are maintained by the volunteers.

The Guardian is an English-language newspaper, published in the UK in electronic and print format weekly. In the UK, the electronic version is read by an audience of 21.1 million readers per month, while the print readership reaches 3.1 million readers per month. Globally, The Guardian reaches 86 million unique readers each month.

We would like to thank the Ramble Worldwide organization and the journalists. With their help, they highlight:

  • the challenge of maintaining the hiking trails of Andros on a permanent basis, a fairly demanding task, considering that the network currently reaches 240km, as well as
  • the importance and value of supporting local producers of our island, a crucial pillar of sustainability, along with cultural associations.
